I haven't read the book, but am now considering doing so after the movies. I found it really enjoyable and very well shot and acted, and just an all round very good film
What I don't get is why it is just SO popular, it is a very good movie, but not the best I have ever seen or anything, just a very good film, not quite enough to justify being one of the best starting movies ever at the box office
