Put the device in the cradle when you're not using it, this is pretty standard with all Lithium Ion battery devices, you need to charge them when they're not in use. Like other lithium ion devices, the charge has a declining rate of charging effectiveness, the device charges much faster if it is empty as opposed to 80% full. Some eShop titles play for 8-10 hours on a full charge. It's typically the more graphical intensive retail games that drain the battery faster.
