From the looks of it, it's worse than that. The DS nearly beat the rest of the 7th gen systems combined for a while, and the PSP only did as well as it did because of one notable franchise. Remember, the Monster Hunter games account for about a quarter of all PSP software in Japanese history. Losing that title as an exclusive is a bigger deal than Nintendo losing Mario or Pokemon on the handheld sphere there, if only because the 3DS would still have the other franchise and Animal Crossing and whatnot to compensate.
What I'm trying to say is, the PSP might have been a sucess only because of a single franchise. Without the franchise, the future of the gaming industry in Japan could be synonymous with the 3DS exclusively, as opposed to handhelds in general.
I'm probably wrong. But when one handheld sells so much without any big new titles, I get suspicious.
