story yes, I'd still say it's one of the best FF's if not the best story wise. the dialogue has issues like most final fantasy's imo. The GBA advance version is a much better direct translation. Some people have nostalgia for the FF6's original translation mistakes, which they affectionatly like.
The gameplay doesn't hold up. Compared to basically any FF after it and FFV before it, chrono trigger, it lacks significantly. I still like it though.
That said, if you've like any FF, the plot of this should definitely keep your butt glued down for the duration of the game.
