How do you know?

The dramatic 3DS price cut happened after the official launch price of Vita was announced and many people got worried Vita would be considered too expensive and here we have relatively week launch sales. I think it's inevitable.

3DS was being sold for about as much more as they dropped the price, vita is being sold at cost or at a loss and the price won't drop until the manufacturing cost drops.

Because Sony have never dropped the price further on a product that is making a loss :-S

Not without dropping the manufactoring cost.

I've lost count on how many PS3 price cuts there have been so I won't argue that. Not that it's a lock in for price cuts only to occur when the manufacturing costs drop, 3DS is the first drastic price cutting we've seen in a long time, so if Sony got scared 3DS was running away with marketshare everywhere (and lets face it, they live for marketshare) they might cut regardless of cheaper manufacturing costs. And what's not say they don't lower costs by next August and mirror the 3DS's path almost exactly?

I'm not saying they will, I think it's more logical for Sony not to cut, but I really don't think it can be called.

Official cuts? I would say (3). People try to claim (6) but that is not true.

November 2007 - 40GB released at $399 (Replaced previously discontinued 20GB), 80GB dropped to $499 (Replaced recently discontinued 60GB)

August 2009 Gamescom - PS3 80GB dropped to $299 to clear stock for $299 Slim 120GB launching September 1st. Also had $399 250GB model.

September 2011 - PS3 160GB dropped to $249 and 320GB dropped to $299 (With Uncharted 3) and $349 (Move Bundle).

Between these times we had revision changes resulting in fire sales of old revisions to clear remaining stock for introduction of new models.

So we get :

2007 - $100 price drop on each model    $500 & $600 -> $400 & $500

2009 - $100 price drop on each model    $400 & $500 -> $300 & $400

2011 - $50 price drop on low end model, $100 price drop on high end model.  $300 & $400 -> $250 & $300-350* (Depending on bundle)

I do not count fire sales of discontinued models as official price cuts.
