I haven't played skyward sword yet, but i've seen how the motion controls work and i'm skeptical, right now i'm leaning towards the touch pad.

Despite the hype that followed one-to-one sword controls in zelda, when you remove the superficial novelty of link moving his hand in sync with yours when he actually slashes it ultimately stems down to directional controls of left, right, up. down diagonally left etc. This sort of directional slash can easily be replicated with the second analog stick with a fraction of the effort required for motion slashes. The same applies to throwing the bombs, again i haven't played the game so i don't know what other mechanics arrive later on.

And some of the other motion controls such as the IR pointing used for arrows and the tilt controls used for the beetle and links shield can be done on the Wii U controler, as it has both these functions built in.

And then we move into the benefits of actually having the 2nd screen, the interface is made even more seamless, constant availability of the map is great, the possibility of having it show a 1st person view while playing. Thats only touching the surface but the Wii U pad seems far more of a functional control which adds depth and less of gimmick. But maybe, i've underestimated the fun factor in using the wii-mote as a sword, i'll have to see when i play the game.
