I think Nintendo wants to expand the ideology behind consoles using a single controller. Much like Microsoft is doing with Kinect having two control devices used in tandom or seperate from one another. Nintendo is not going to ditch motion controls at least not likely in the near future. I fully expect Nintendo to use the Tablets and motion controls together in many games as they showed with the golf demo where you lay the tablet on the ground and swing with the controller.
My bet is that the Nintendo console after WiiU will be able to handle four tablets (An advanced new tablet) and four motion controllers simultaneously. Giving gamers 8 player and they will make other advancements as well. In the end I think Nintendo will continue to offer new experiances and try to mix in the existing ones.
I'd also suspect many Nintendo titles to be playable campaign with the Tablet or Wiimote or even the classic controller. I don't know how much times and resources it takes to make the titles cross compatable but with Wii it seemed to work very good for select titles.
So as I said I don't expect Motion controls to really go anywhere in the next two generations. But of course three generations from now we could be playing with holograms so who really knows what will happen with the motion controls in the long run.
As for why we need so many controllers to choose from. Nintendo wants to give Nintendo gamers experiances they can't have on other platforms. The tablet and motion controls in tandom will offer unique experiances. Playing a game with three different controllers will make the game far more enjoyable say in replay value. Not to mention Nintendo can sell a shit ton of controllers which is a great business plan. Also once we are playing local multiplayer with six people it will just blow us away. It would appear Nintendo is the only company that still plans on supporting local multiplayer to its fullest.
