I think the question is how much did MS/360 influence PS3 release as well as other, non gaming console factors? Personally, my view is Sony would actually have prefered to wait longer to release PS3 than they did. Three factors I believe motivated them to bring it to market sooner than they would otherwise have:
1 - They saw how 360/Live was really setting the standard for online gaming on console in West and saw PS2 simply didn't have capabilities to compete
2 - They had to rush to launch so they didn't start too far behind the 360
3 - They had commited themselves to Blu-Ray and co-opted the PS3 into the fight
Really, if it wasn't for MS rush to market and Blu-Ray I doubt the PS3 would have launched when it did. I think Sony would have waited another 12 months if it wasn't for 360/BR combination - i.e. if they were just looking at PS2 sales and didn't feel any competitive need to launch sooner.
For me the question is does MS have to rush to market while it's current console is selling really well in a similar manner to Sony with the PS3?
My view is no. The Wii U I just don't see as a threat to 360 in US, UK and Europe and while I doubt they want to launch behind the PS4 I doubt Sony is suddenly going to spring the PS4 on the market anytime soon.
MS can take 2012 to consolidate their position and use Halo 4 to drive another big sales spike and serve as a bit of a last exclusive "hurrah" for the console. Then during 2013 then prepare way for a launch late Q3 or Q4 2013. The 360 stays on the market at a low price to further grow brand and is used to try and further expand global presence. Halo 5 launches on Nextbox to really pull the core over who've invested in Halo so far during 2014.
I think launching a new console so close to Halo 4 seems very unlikely so 2013 seems more likly for me. 2014 does seem a bit too far out, Sony could well launch PS4 2013 as well and if MS waited beyond that they could let Sony take first run at the market.
So I reckon 2013 will see new Xbox console and possibly a new Playstation console as well.
Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...
