Just for argument's sake, lets say your right (which i dont think you are, not totally). WHich games for GB sold really well, that did not come from a console orginally?? The only one that comes to mind is Pokemon, and that is a JRPG, something that works well in both console/portable

Tetris. Came out on the Gameboy before the NES.

Kirby's Dream Land. That's how Kirby started out. Fun fact: Because the Gameboy couldn't display colors, Kirby ended up being white on the boxart too.

Wario Land. Started on the Gameboy too.

All games sold more than five million copies and fit your requirement. Of course this is completely ignoring that the Super Mario Land games were built specifically for the Gameboy too, instead of blindly forcing an NES port on an underpowered piece of hardware. It also ignores the fact the console games of the old days were very much suited for handheld play, because they were of similar nature. Pick up and play, easy to learn and hard to master.

Nowadays console games aren't like that which is why porting or even forcing them on handhelds doesn't lead to big success. This has much to do with the recent Malstrom article of how consumers define the handheld experience.

This is something I agree with 110 percent. Those games you mentioned are good games, they are 2d platformers which were popular before they went to handhelds. Its one of the genres that do well in both.  But i would not consider them in the same form of something like NInendogs or BrainTraining, which ONLY seem to work on handhelds.

For the most part your right. But that ignores the dozens of games that have done well that you describe. GTA Liberty and Vice Stories, Mario 64 DS, OOT 3d, GOWs, Mario Kart DS??, Mario and Luigi?? or do JRPGS fall into your pickup and play theme that those GB games do. Hell even those MOH PSP games made a profit and sold a million or two. If the the experience is there for the most part people will respond, they might not do crazy numbers, but they will do well enough that will buy
