I agree that the fps genre, is becoming very generic, but this happened very recently. Even in the beginning of this generation there have been many unique fps. Killzone 2, halo 3, team fortress 2, crysis, left 4 dead, bioshock, portal, borderlands and fallout 3, are all very different from one another.
In the past two years we've gotten Call of Duty MW2 and its expansion Black Ops, medal of honor... homefront... bad company 2 and its more high def remake Battlefield 3(but this time with jets!?!).
Crysis 2 and killzone 3 basically got rid of their predecessors unique formula in favor of becoming just more COD clones. Resistance 3 and bulletstorm tried to be different and we clearly see how well, i mean bad they are selling.
Call of Duty really killed the fps genre imo excpet of course if you like call of duty, which I'm sorry I'm bashing so much, but those of us who don't like it are stuck having our once favorite franchises changed to entice the huge call of duty fanbase.
As for tps, Uncharted and Gears of War are extremly overrated. I especially wonder why so many people think uncharted has a great story line. It doesn't.
The good tps, in terms of gameplay, vanquish, dead space, and infamous are few and far in between. All this is IMO of course.
