ps3 has a faster sell rate than the 360 had in its first five years.

This is true, but PS3 was riding the hype of PS2 and taken significantly more price cuts. The current price of the 360 shows they are in it to make money, not just move some hardware.

And the 360 launched at $200 less than the PS3 a year earlier.  It was also the first console this gen, including the Wii, to drop its price to $199.

More importantly than the 360 being $200 less and released a year earlier, the PS3 was just too expensive at launch.

Hence, a $300 PS3 would have likely killed the competition even if they were $99. Just like PS2 killed its cheaper competition.

Makes you really question the competence of Sony as a business, huh?

For the earlier part of this gen, a little.  Of course, there was no way they could have sold it for less, as it cost ~$800 to make in the beginning.  But, they have definitely been able to turn it around the past 2-3 years, so you have to give them credit there.  Fortunately for Sony, the PS brand was very strong, because no one else has been able to or would be able to survive what Sony was able to survive this gen.  Though, things they did put forth this gen is only going to help them next gen, i.e. PSN, Blu-ray, and the concept of the Cell processor (more specifically the evolution of the Cell tech).
