It's only a big deal here in the West, I really don't see how it is 'the biggest blow to the game's ability to sell', especially for a Japan centred game such as MH.
Also, I wouldn't be surprised if/when the game gets localised, online play is added for the European and/or American versions, considering the popularity of MH3's online. Myself, I loved the online on MH3, since over 200 hours into it, it also forced me to brush up on my foreign language skills as well, which is always a bonus.
EDIT: I forgot about this, but I guess I could always go to that MH centre that Capcom opened up in London back in 2009.
