It should've been a straight up slaughter or get slaughtered game with tricks and tweaks.

From what I know it's still a level based game, so there isn't much of a danger to get lost. Yes, it's not straightforward, but it's nowhere near as complicated as a Metroid game.

Got 85/100 in M!Games, so it seems like a solid game. What's putting me off though is that it's not enough like Metroid.

That's a plus. The only games in which I like "metroidism" are pretty much the Prime games, because the atmosphere is top notch and I like finding the secret stuff (didn't finish Super Metroid - don't have a SNES yet).

Castlevania taking the same route however is quite annoying. My favorite is Bloodlines on the Genesis, and I find it really hard to get into the "Metroidvania" ones. If it is indeed level based, then I still may look into it @ $20.
