I'm 99% certain the game alone is not going to make any sort of profit for id (possibly keep the ip in the red); however, when it's well-received critically (this is id Software), they make a profit on the series down the road through sequels and DLC's. Certainly make some good change from the engine too.

They already made some money from the IP through the iPhone game, which sold quite well.

They've mentioned 6 years dev. time for RAGE, so I think it's safe to say iPhone game sales may have only covered 10-15% of all total costs.  Granted I'm pulling figures out of my ass, but I don't see iphone profits allievating much of the costs in id Tech 5 and RAGE development.  We'll have to wait and see what they say in a few months down the road (like Epic did with Bulletstorm).

I remember reading (or possibly hearing at a dev talk) that iD have only had around 40 people working on the title which would explain the 6 yrs dev cycle and probably helped to keep the costs down. Compared to some dev studios that have 150+ people working on a single game over 2-3 years I don't think it'd be that bad.

OT: It might not be as front-loaded as it could have been due to the packed release schedule. However, after playing it at Eurogamer I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised (one of my fave of the expo actually). I suspect word of mouth and good reviews will give it a nice sales boost whilst keeping the game selling for a good while. To be honest I don't think it's been marketed as well as it should but I still feel the game will stand up on its merits. PC numbers for this title are also likely to be high given iD's PC based history
