Well, it has been riding on CoD's popularity, and CoD is pretty much known everywhere. All it really takes is one person to say that X game is going to rival CoD, and if the game looks good, then people show interest in it. Word of mouth pretty much.
Also, Battlefield this gen has been known as CoD's rival. EA is just doing a good job at making sure the CoD community knows about it.
