As far as we know, that could just mean that there's a part of the game that forces you to try it out online before you can continue the story. Considering the fact that the "DQ Three" are still all fulfilling their traditional DQ development roles, I highly doubt that Yuji Horii would allow the game to go that kind of bullshit direction without losing him. |
Problem is if you have to get online (even if it's only once during the whole game) you won't be able to play through the game after they shut down the servers. So your game has sort of a purge date. Which could work for a traditional online RPG but not for Dragon Quest... unless they make it a "real" online game in which case 80% of customers wouldn't be interested in buying it.
I still play through NES and Super NES games. Imagine being unable to play through Final Fantasy VII today because they shut down some server...
@ OP: I could actually see Nintendo publishing this game in the west right at the WiiU launch. Would be a great idea and give the series a chance to shine. A launch line-up consisting of Wii Sports U, Mario Bros. Mii, Pikmin and Dragon Quest would cover all potential buyers and move loads of hardware.
