If you accept the believe (or disbelief for that matter) of a concious "God," I think one of three things NEED to be true, if you look at all the suffering that has taken place in our world.. Either:

1. There is no God

2. There IS a God, but he has no control over the evils of the world

3. There IS a God, but he simply doesn't care.

The raminfications of any of these three options to me are pretty frightening, any way you slice it.

This is why in my opinion, yes there is some sort of higher "power" out there that we do not, or cannot comprehend. But I don't see this power as a concious, human-like "being" that watches over us and makes decisions on a whim that shape our world and universe. I think rather it is more like a set of laws or concept, like gravity, that we have yet to discover, and may never.

There is a 4th option you overlooked. There are probably more, but I'm just going to talk about the obvious one.

4. There is a God, and we can't possibly understand his motivations.

You touched on this a little in your final comment after your three part list. We can't understand God.

Suffering seems a cruel fate to us because our lives are short. We are born, we live, and we die. We shouldn't assume that's all there is. If there is a God then there is more that we can't see or hope to understand. Perhaps we are all meant to be challenged in different ways. Perhaps after death there is a peace so great that all the suffering you may have endured in life is relieved and understood.

I'm just saying, suffering in the world does not mean God doesn't care, can't do anything, or doesn't excist. Maybe how we deal with our suffering and the suffering of others is the whole point of life. The whole "love thy neighbor" thing and all. Perhapes the point of life is to help those you need help, to comfort those you need it, to work for peace instead of war, etc.
