I wouldn't put anything past Nintendo at this point, especially when it comes to their handheld market. They have gotten a dose of reality, and have realized that people didn't want a new DS, especially one that costs as much as the typical home console, and with 3D. I think it is very possible that a 3DS retooling/relaunch could take place, that undermines or eliminates the 3D feature entirely and goes back to basics, and attracting the mass market again. Nintendo needs to be agressive in their handheldmarket, especially now that the Wii sales are dwindling.

Yes Nintendo needs to get aggressive by pissing off what little support they have and aiming at a market that wouldn't support them. That makes perfect sense.
People did want a new DS , software sales were dipping and consumers were ready for something new. As for 3D its a huge selling feature and many early adopters purchased it for the new technology, without the 3D effect the 3DS would be so technologically inferior to Vita its not worth talking about. As for the price of 250$ yes that was the deal breaker alongside the lack of software. Those two reasons are why the 3DS failed, Nintendo already is fixing that with the price cut, then they will announce alot of software shortly to fix the software shortage.
Especially with Wii sales dwindling Nintendo cannot afford to piss off its entire user base. A new hardware revision would do so much harm to Nintendo's image it isn't funny. Sales would collapse and consumers would be very unlikely to purchase a new handheld or WiiU.
Look what happened when Sega launched new hardware constantly because the other hardware wasn't selling that well. They pissed off their user base and pissed off the developers. They lost all chance at competing when DreamCast launched. If Nintendo launches a new model that makes the old one obsolete , it will DreamCast. Infact WiiU sales will be negatively effected causing it too to fail.
Nintendo needs to fix the situation without pissing off the developers, publishers and their large consumer base. Just look at how much damage the price cut did to consumer confidence. A new model would be the end of Nintendo as a leader in the handheld business and possibly home console business.

Maybe, but I think the short term damage would be worth the investment in the long run. The 3DS is a lost cause in my view. The cost barrier is still too high, and it seems most people still don't care much about 3D, at least as a major selling point. I think Nintendo needs to take more of a budget gaming approach similar to the Iphone games, but maybe a little more fleshed out. They need to start creating more mass market games like Brain Age again, that attract a wider audience. While this could be done on the 3DS I suppose, I think a fresh start would be a better approach. Launch a new cheaper handheld for $120, make it more powerful than the DS, but axe the 3D, which just tacks on more to the cost and deters the mass market, like high cost from the Blu Ray did for the PS3.
I still don't believe they even necessarily needed to launch a new DS in the first place. The only reason DS sales took a hit was because the supply of new games dried up. If Nintendo kept releasing quality games for the platform, I don't see why the DS sales wouldn't still be very strong, and it sure would have been a hell of a lot cheaper for them. Hell, even now, when a successor is released, and very few games for the DS, the DS still puts up decent numbers. while I think a new home console may be about due, Nintendo probably could have turned the DS into a 10 year console similar to the Gameboy before releasing a new one. When you have the most succesful console of all time, cutting its life after six/seven years seems a little premature to me.
