Yes Nintendo needs to get aggressive by pissing off what little support they have and aiming at a market that wouldn't support them. That makes perfect sense.

People did want a new DS , software sales were dipping and consumers were ready for something new. As for 3D its a huge selling feature and many early adopters purchased it for the new technology, without the 3D effect the 3DS would be so technologically inferior to Vita its not worth talking about. As for the price of 250$ yes that was the deal breaker alongside the lack of software. Those two reasons are why the 3DS failed, Nintendo already is fixing that with the price cut, then they will announce alot of software shortly to fix the software shortage.

Especially with Wii sales dwindling Nintendo cannot afford to piss off its entire user base. A new hardware revision would do so much harm to Nintendo's image it isn't funny. Sales would collapse and consumers would be very unlikely to purchase a new handheld or WiiU.

Look what happened when Sega launched new hardware constantly because the other hardware wasn't selling that well. They pissed off their user base and pissed off the developers. They lost all chance at competing when DreamCast launched. If Nintendo launches a new model that makes the old one obsolete , it will DreamCast. Infact WiiU sales will be negatively effected causing it too to fail.

Nintendo needs to fix the situation without pissing off the developers, publishers and their large consumer base. Just look at how much damage the price cut did to consumer confidence. A new model would be the end of Nintendo as a leader in the handheld business and possibly home console business.
