I thought only 4 wii motes will work with the Wii U at the same time.

If you have other people who will be playing the Wii, you can give them your extra controllers to play that you aren't using for the Wii U.

 

Or you can keep all 5 controllers so that when one of them breaks, you have a free reserve. =)
