Sales come from continued good support and a healthy pricepoint.
PS3 and 360 both have these 2 points locked down. With the Wii U not being oh so more powerful than the current HD consoles, continued support is guaranteed unless Nintendo decide to moneyhat every big franchise.
As for the current sales, let's compare it to last gen. This time 6 Years ago (5 Years into the Gen), the Gamecube and the Xbox sold 21000 and 65000 units WW respectively. This time 5 Years ago (6 Years in), GC and XB sold 16000 and 4000 units respectively. PS2 sold 183000 units. In 2005, the Xbox sold 3.6 Million units. The 360 will breeze that in America alone this Year. The GC sold 2.7 Million units. Yeah.
Both PS3 and 360 are selling extremely well. The gap in next gen tech isn't too big at all, when compared to the leap between PS2 to HD consoles. MS are getting massive profits, Sony WANT profits. Both machines are getting continued strong support from 1st, 2nd and 3rd parties.
There is no reason at all for Sony or MS to launch a new console in the next Year or 2 IMO. No reason at all.
