@ The guys saying that "they should have said this years ago".

The OS' ram usage has been shrinking as updates were released. There was some news a while ago that the system has gained somewhere around 80-120MB since it's release. Games now are using more ram on the system than games in the earlier years. This is no doubt one of the reasons why some PS3 games actually release with the latest firmware on disc so that you can update incase your ps3 isn't connected to the internet. You have to consider that while freeing up ram for future features they also have developer that are always asking for more ram so that also takes priority.

SONY's made a comment in the past that they know it's something that gamers want and it's in the works. It's been no.1 on share blog since SONY started that section of their website. Numerous devs such has Naughty Dog have also made it obvious that it's something that's been constantly worked on.

I think the reason they're saying this now is because they've simply finally accepted that they just couldn't get it to work while at the same time providing more freedom for devs which obviously had to take priority seeing as devs were from the get go not to happy with working with the PS3.
