The 3DS sold badly compared to predictions (Nintendo's)... it didn't sell badly.
What it did though is come out 4 months too early as the game library clearly was not ready for post launch support.
I mean it's nice to discover the eshop, the videos and all after a few weeks... but that too could have come out right away ^^.
