To do the maths behind this, at 720p it requires 2764800 bytes of frame buffer. So even if all 3mb was available, there is no way it could do double buffering.
At 1080i, we do 2 half frames seperately, so its really 1920x540 required at any one time. This requires 3110400 bytes, so puts it out of reach of the wii to begin with.
Of course, as was the uproar over halo 3, even HD games aren't necessarily rendered at 1280x720. I suppose if the Wii has a hardware upscaler, it might be possible to do 1067x600 graphics at 720p.
