Yeah, but something must be happening behind the curtain, because if it was the same scenario as the DS, nintendo would have not made a price-cut so soon.   Maybe a lot of retailers have stopped placing orders for the system, who knows.

amazon had it unavailable for sale a little bit ago... people speculated it was due to shipping mishandling... maybe it was due to poor sales/stock ratio?

Yeah, I suppose that could be the case,  but something really fishy must be going on if only 3 months later they are making a price-cut.   And If they are just doing it because of the incomming arrival of the PSVITA, then PSVITA is a beast indeed :D.   They even went so far to even lower the salary of most important people at nintendo that is just weird man. link: http://nintendoeverything.com/70659/

See, you'll make anything fit your view. You think they lowered their salaries because of the vita. It's obviously a factor, but by far only one of many... Even if the Vita was against the DS it would've had a similar success. The 3DS is weaker than the DS as a sellable item, and that's the comparison you should be looking at. The Vita is secondary.

The DS was a beast, and that's the beast you should be comparing to, not the Vita. Sorry for being blunt.

Well, I said the Vita thing, because I just wanted to say something as a PS fan :D . I really think the PSVITA has the chance to take the crown this time, but I really dont expect them to take the direction they are taking right now because of the VITA. 

My point of view is quite simple, and it is that I think there is something really weird going on, for them to adobt such drastic "economic politics" only 3 or so months after the release of the system.     It is as if they knew they have and "EPIC failure" in the making, but nobody have notice it yet.   I would compare more facts between the 2 nintendo handhelds, but I think there is nothing much to compare about the DS and the 3DS right now, aside the "not so great sales" in the first year, the name (lol), nintendo games and the possible escenario that the 3DS could eventually sell better.
