I just don't understand why Google, with all their brain power and resources didn't see this coming?

Hell yeah.. Google don't tend to invent stuff and patent them.. they buy patents when they need them.. sure you could say they overestimated the patent aquisition but the thing is with android.. while android itself is free.. it's open sourced... you can mess with it.. BUT some of the tech in it requires a license when you use it and if manufactures want to use it in their phones THEY have to pay up the licence fee... that's why nobody is actually gonna go after google.. so yeah google saw this coming and let the manufactures deal with it.. it could get messy if a dozen of companies are going to want make licensing deals for the use of android.. it would just become too expensive..

in the end MS will earn more money then google on android just because they own more patents..
