that might mean your power plugs aren't well connecting. I was facing that issue a lot as well a while ago and it was just because the plug to the power brick was a little loose, when I pushed it in the problem was solved.
In other news he should have been adviced to get a wii instead. Why go through the trouble of rrod and yellow light of death.
