Personally, I think a simultaneous WU/PS3/360 release would be best at this point. I can't imagine the figures DQX will do given the current state of the Wii, let alone the state of the Wii a year or more from now. The Wii has only managed to move 2.5 million units of software so far this year in Japan. Total. That number will be significantly lower next year, so for DQX to pull decent figures for a Dragon Quest title, it'd have to outsell every other Wii release for the first half of the year combined and then some. |
It's not assuming anything.
That's actually more or less a direct quote.
As for more support... How many games have Enix made lately?
Outside of Dragon Quest 9 on DS, and Dragonquest swords on Wii?
It's often forgotten but Square and Enix still operate seperatly... and Enix never really made a ton of games.
Despite being more valuable and in general a better company then Square mostly Enix is/was a lisensing house in it's videogame division... with the few IPS they do control being mostly DQ, and basically always for the market leader. Enix supported Wii and DS like crazy. It was the square side that missed out.
As for it being a mistake... don't be surprised if it's not. Dragon Quest could be released on Gameboy Advance and it'd do 3 Million in japan and probably spike Gameboy Advance sales to outsell the 3DS. And Japan is where it's going to sell... since DQ sells like crap everywhere else.
When it releases, the Wii will STILL have more consoles sold in Japan then the PS3, by a few million... and it will move systems.
With 3DS being so poor, there really wasn't a better move. Multiplat would be a waste of money... and in truth I can't think of a single Enix ordered multi-plat game ever. They've had a few liscesed multiplats but that's it.
