They are the same thing as a username. You are given a number sequence instead of being able to create a username. Then you have to trade your "username" with other people to play them specifically or you can play random people of whom you don't know their "username".
I prefer EA's way of giving me an actual username for all of my EA games. BTW, its superchunkwii.
