The gamecube function on the Wii is actually a Gamecube, which means it doesn't recognize anything that is Wii anymore once a Gamecube disc is inserted (so only GC controller and memorycards). The Wii is so to say 2 seperate consoles in one.
Official Nintendo Gamecube accesoiries are harder and harder to find and second hand games are getting more expensive. 3rd party GC controllers and memorycards are very easy to find though.
What Nintendo should do: Sell the Gamecube contoller (preferably wireless) in Wii design with 5 quality GameCube titles for say $50,-. This way the people that left Nintendo after SNES/N64 or those new to Nintendo can enjoy some of the brilliant games Gamecube had to offer for a decent price and Nintendo and 3rd party partyners can make some more profit on old games.
Ideas: Eternal Darkness, REmake, Pikmin, Metroid, Beyond Good & Evil, Windwaker, etc...
