Hasn't this lack of third party support been present since the N64 days?

Yes but the reason why it got very little suppport was because its powerfull (at the time) but complex architechure was hard and pricey to program. Developers now seem to like working on these complex powerfull machines with pretty eye candy; IMO hence why they don't want to work on a system like the Wii. To me it seems the industry (here at least) went somewhat backwards. Even if nintendo's next console does deliver in power, developers will probably just make another excuse not to make games for it, but I could be wrong.
