I don't think 2D Mario can possibly be bad.
Pro's
The levels are fun.
4 Player is fun.

They used Toad Character Model Twice in 4 player. This isn't a big deal. But feels like cutting corners or a poor design decision and it bugs me.
The graphics don't really feel magical. They feel mario gone play. I would have prefered the sprites
Maybe it's just in my head but the jumping feels off when compared to the older ones. Either way it bothered me.
It's a good game. However, there are too many things that kept me from thoroughly enjoying it, even if they were small things it nagged at my brain while I was playing it.
