"THQ stated that a big budget next gen game would cost around 100$ at retail they said it would cost almost double to develop over the current generation."

This is why the graphics race has to stop. They aren't making the games better (the good games are due to talent, not waving their specs around), and the sales have NOT risen this generation to match the increased cost over last generation.

I agree with this.

I've said for a while now that we don't need to go too far beyond the PS3/360 level of graphics.

I mean, last gen the major game norm was about I guess $5-$7 million, maybe $10, with the big games being about $30-$40 million (the sure things like Final Fantasy and GTA). Now the norm is about $20-$25 million on the HD systems, with the big games being $60-$100 million.

Not only is there the issue of what another major advancement would cost, there is also the matter of sales for those games from last gen to now, or even the last two gens to now. They haven't really gone up. Not across the board* to make up for those.

* Since individual hits are outliers.

Ajusted for inflation Shenmue 1&2 (they were developed cuncurrently and the only reason they weren't one game was because they needed to recoup costs) cost $93,893,697. The only non MMOs to cost more than 50 mill that to my knowlage are games like GT5, FF XIII, RDR and GTA4.

and GTA4 cost so much not so much due to.

"over 1,000 people worked on the game for over 3 and a half years, doing everything from studying New York city with cameras that recorded city traffic for months, to contacting over 2,000 people just to obtain the rights to the hundreds of music tracks that can be listened to in the game. Price to record a master for each track ran at around $10,000 and that excludes the license and royalty fees."

yes that's right the music, add in the dozens of voice actors and that is what cost so much not graphics.

Uncharted 2 had a reported budget of 20$ million and is considered one of the best looking games ever...

there are plenty of game last gen that cost more than 40 mill as well production values as a whol have improved last generation professional voice actors, motion capture big name producers/creators that demand higher salaries were less common. graphics are actually but a small part in the ever increasing cost of game development .
