The more casual aspect of the fighter makes it ideal for the handheld market. You're not going to get really serious on a handheld game, like you would a home console game.
Also a 3 hour battery life is a serious flaw of the system, but I don't think I've ever played Smash Bros for longer then 3 hours straight. Most people get handhelds to play for 20 minute bursts, and with 5 minute matches, thats pretty ideal.
Hope the 3DS remake has a better battery, like the DS Lite did. I can see sales jump when that comes out.
