SNES ports could be seen as a gift in a world of gaming where everything is in 3D. Maybe that's the reason why the DS had a slower start than the GBA, because people were led to believe that handheld games now also were going to be first and foremost in 3D. To answer your question, not much. People don't want to play with me. Regarding the 3DS, Nintendo should have launched with a first party title that supports proper game sharing, not just multiplayer with very limited options. That would have been in the spirit of social gaming. |
Game sharing isn't just sharing via system to system, that's very limited in scope and doesn't make people who don't have a system take notice, in fact they seem segregated from the "nerds having fun", on the other hand Face Raiders encourages you to snap a photo of a friend, show your friend what they look like, what the software sees them as (male/female and age) and show them how you're blasting them in the face with balls.
This is something only the Wii has launched with, you picked up a controller, put in Wii sports, had fun, others saw you having fun and wanted to join in so most of the games were designed to allow for only one controller and you juse passed the controller off, same goes for 3DS, *snap photo* *they see you play* *they want to join in* *pass the 3DS to them and they snap a photo of you and play*.
There is a reason Nintendo said they see the pack-in software on the 3DS as the "equivalent to Wii Sports for Wii" and it's not just Face Raiders but Mii Maker, AR games, and the applications as well.
I mean what other portable device entices young ladies to pose just for a picture in 3D

Sadly this image is not in the 3D the original was
but the point is the functions create buzz and interaction much like the Wii and that's their plan from day 1.
