I don't think that is accurate at all. Most Wii owners I know never had a Nintendo home console before, but did have a  Nintendo GBA and/or DS and were often fans of Nintendo 16-bit and 8-bit titles through remakes and emulators. I actually do not know a single person who owned Wii as their first console ever.

Also, a lot of WIi owners I know also had Sony or Sega home consoles as well; but then again, I can tell you that when I went to University, no one owned a Gamecube.
