Actually, the NES release of Dragon Quest 1 (then titled Dragon Warrior) was published by Nintendo in the US. (For that matter, so was Final Fantasy 1. Was Nintendo trying to help RPGs get a foothold over here?) Enix started publishing it themselves at DQ2. Nintendo is also the US publisher of DQ6 on the DS.

In Japan it was always called Dragon Quest from day 1, Dragon Quest was only Dragon Warrior in the US though due to the name Dragon Quest already belong to a table top RPG or something like that.

and Dragon Quest was always published by Enix in Japan.
