Sure, if you believe that cartridges were the main culprit for Nintendo's demise, then it might just look that way. It's not like CDs really helped Sega at that time, now did they?

PS1 games were always $15 or more dollars cheaper than N64 gmes.  The whole reason came down to differences in manufacturing costs between cartriges and CDs.  That and Sony's head start into the market were huge advantages.

Take away the price advantage and that gen looks very different.  I think we still would have seen a PS2 though.
