How has the battle system changed in Pokemon since the early days? I really just like solid, interesting, tactical battles, more so than actually "catchin 'em all". |
Nice! What was your first issue? I started with issue 116 (N64 Castlevania baby.
)
As for battling, if you haven't played since the GBC Gold/Silver, a lot has changed, but the core is still there. Here's some changes to the battles:
- Pokemon now have abilities (introduced in Ruby/Sapphire), which is sort of like "Pokemon Powers" from the card game. Each Pokemon has its own power/ability that affects battles.
- Example: Gyarados has the "Intimidate" ability, which lowers the opponents attack at the start.
- Special/Physical attacks are no longer dependant on the element type (introduced in Diamond/Pearl).
- Example: Gyarados has a massive Attack Stat, but the water attacks it knew were still under the Special Attack. This has changed, as every attack is not dependent on type. So an attack called Aqua Tail (a water attack) is now a Physical attack. Every elemental type has both Physical and Special attacks.
- 1 v 1 battles are still the dominant type of battling. Still, Ruby/Sapphire introduced 2 v 2 battles and Black/White will introduce 3 v 3 battles.
