The first part of the game is slow, but it also teaches you how to do all the basics. Collecting items may seem boring, but those items are very necessary to the game and you should start building up your supplies as soon as possible. It took me a while to get into it, but man-o-man is it addictive once you get going.
In the absence of evidence to the contrary, always assume you have the upper hand.
