A lot of people predicted PS3 would close the gap significantly in 2010. Even 360 fans thought it would.
In case people forgot, the gap was about 3.6 million in October of 2010. It jumped back up to 5 4.5 million by the end of the year though.
In my opinion the gap will grow primarily because of the Kinect. The 360 now appeals to both casual and core gamers.
The only thing Sony could possibly do to sell more consoles is another price cut. But they won't do that unless MS cuts prices first.
THOUGHTS?!???!???

Eh that's going a bit far.. It's like saying the Wii now appeals to FPS gamers because it has Goldeneye, Reflex, and Black Ops. I don't know about you, but I sure don't know any soccer moms or grandpas who bought a $300-$400 Xbox 360, and certainly not just for games like Kinect Adventures and Dance Central.. It doesn't seem like Kinect helped lift Xbox 360 hardware sales this holiday anyway, especially after the adjustment of - a million plus. I think the slim model, Halo, Black Ops, and the natural holiday boost were more the reason for the surge. Yes Kinect sold a lot during the holiday but I think a large chunk of those sales were current 360 owners.
Anyway, the gap will maintain roughly the same, with the PS3 possibly inching a bit closer as a result of its Japan advantage. Kinect may be helping the 360 for a bit, but only seems to be in the US, and it won't last even there if the Kinect games don't get any better.

I think Kinect has sold more casual software than Wii has sold core software. :-p
I mean Dance Central is going to outsell CoD games on the Wii.
The Kinect definitely helped console sales. I mean 360 sales were huge this holiday and many of the Kinect bundles were sold out. I doubt this happened because of core sequels.

Depends how you define "core" software. Some would say Mario Galaxy 1 & 2, Zelda, Metroid Prime etc. are all core titles :P
OT: Every year we have a thread estimating the gap change, but I think this will be one of the more interesting years. I think Kinect will definately help to push more 360s, especially in America. Not sure if it will really help much outside US and UK though.
PS3 performance on the other hand is a a bit harder to predict. We saw from the last report Sony released that in emerging markets the PS3 was very strong, so whilst it may lose ground in the US & UK, it may actually not matter if it continues to sell well in emerging markets. The recent piracy problems could also actually help to sell more hardware in these markets. The other issue is how much effort Sony will be able to put into marketing PS3 with NGP on the way.
Honestly, it's difficult to say, but I don't think the gap will change significantly and will essentially stay at around 4 million. Guess we'll know more when the financial reports are out.
