That's a very romantic way of seeing it, but if games really were all that mattered then why did people buy different consoles after SNES or PS1 or PS2 ? These consoles arguably had the best game line-ups ever and still people bought different consoles after that.

Maybe for the exclusives (those who wanted all experiences on all consoles) and also because "best" is relative. I may have found Gamecube lineup best last generation, most others found PS2.
