On a worldwide basis, Japanese gamers seem to be the ones who care the least about cutting edge technology and graphics.

Well I think Japanese gamers just want the same genres they've always played. The games they want just happen to be on handheld consoles.

The games core American gamers want are garbage on hand held consoles. Not just in graphics, but all around quality.

Well yeah, if the typical Japanese genres were notably inferior on handhelds, then they would stay away just like Americans do now. On the other hand, I highly doubt that Americans would switch to handhelds if the games were up to par sans graphics.

I feel like it should mentioned that Americans buy everything, not just machines that pump out the best graphics. Popular games in Japan are generally popular in NA as well.

Far more PSP and DS consoles have been sold in NA than Japan. iPhone and Android are very successful gaming devices. Wii is also the best selling home console in NA.  I think that's enough proof that Americans don't just care about graphics like many believe.

The games core gamers enjoy just happen to be on the most powerful machines. Its not just the graphics that appeal to them, those titles just happen to have the most depth or offer superior multiplayer.
