Definitely the latter. This is one of the most un-linear platformers I've played in a long while. While the point is to get from A to B, getting there has so many little options and ways to do it.
It's definitley an Exploration based platformer... if I could describe it. Still, there's not really any said "box" in which you can put this game in, which is one of the game's strengths.

Agreed. You can die so fast in this game. It's pretty unforgiving (really, I don't think there's any invulneralbility time). And yeah, I just had my first experience where the camera finally got in the way of me achieving a puzzle (I accidentally painted in a wall instead of the object behind it, and when I tried manuvering around the semi-painted wall, it went bonkers and I ran out of time.)
And yes, the Hook battle is brilliant! There's four different ways of defeating him! That's so great.
For the Mad Doctor, I didn't even realize there was more than one way to defeat him until it was already done. Too bad... (I had all paint victories before.)
