Sadly the Academy Awards is the only award show that matters to me really. I know they aren't perfect in fac tI disagree with the quite often but the producers have done a great job keeping up the pedigree and prestige to the Oscars. People around the worl pay attention to them and they only give out around 30 a year (not including technical and honarary awards) compared to something like 150 Gammys per year.

Crash won a Best picture Oscar, and The Blind Side was a Best Picture nominee last year (you copuld consider it the equivalent of Teenage Dream's Album of the Year nomination at the Grammys).

Plus the Oscars are too much of a political game (think of the smear campaign the producers of The Hurt Locker were using against Avatar last year), and become more like the presidential elections, rather than an awards show where they should award the actual quality and merit of a film, performance etc.

I'm well aware of the many mistakes the Academy Awards has made over the years (Gladiator over Wo Hu Cang Long being the most painful for me) but they are overall respectable at least. The Hurt Locker smear campaign was the work of ONE of the 3 producers and he was punished.

I like how unpredictable the Oscars can be and even though they fail to recognize some truly great cinema sometimes they do bring to light some under the radar gems (Hurt Locker is the lowest grossing best picture winner to date).
