Alan Wake is pretty great if you like thriller/horror games.

I've started Mass Effect, but it's a really mixed bag for me. On one hand the conversation system, the story and the depth of the world you play in is incredible, but the action is rubbish! On top of that, checkpoints aren't something you find often, and the manual save mechanic is slow as hell. I don't know whether to recommend it or not.

Gotta say, that's a very mixed review! I like that, though. Balanced. I'll maybe see if i can borrow it or rent it from somewhere/someone rather than buying it

Good choice. I'm considering waiting for PS3 version of ME2, just so I can skip all of the bad stuff. But I'm really, really picky with things like checkpoints and convoluted gameplay, so it might be better to judge by your own standards.
