Just as an example. I think post restricted mafia is an ok variant and I think it would be fun to try once in a while (I don't think we've ever done one here). It adds some chaos, but doesn't try to cause people to intentionally play poorly. pro town roles are encouraged to play as a pro town, and scum roles are encouraged to play as scum. Everyone who is pro town is assigned a post restriction and the scum aren't and have to come up with their own post restriction.
For example, the town might have
- forced to quote
- must quack in a post (I once saw an interesting game where they were massons where the mother quacked once and the ducks quacked twice, but they couldn't PM each other)
- must talk like a robot
- must speak spanish
- must vote whenever they post
However, post restrictions like "cannot post" are completely stupid and pointless just like having a stump in the game.
I also like power role games which add chaos, but I don't like power role games where everyone is insane as that just takes it too far. One or two insane roles for a very large game are ok. I have nothing against themed games except I'm not familiar with the themes so I don't generally care for them. For example, I liked WoW's fantasy theme game where we had different color mages, dragons and a lot of unique roles but it was easy to understand and get into. However, I didn't have any interest in a Sailor Moon game as I haven't watched Sailor Moon in probably 12 years or more.
