Actually PS3 has sold more software worldwide than X360 if you align the launches. It seems that this myth that X360 sells a lot more software compared to PS3 is still alive and kicking.

Well I'm not gonna bother trying to align launches. But he's every year of software sales according to VGChartz.

This year seems close now. But I have a feeling the 360 is gonna have a significant lead in over all software sales at the end of the year. Especially with Kinect sales.

2010
X360     85,593,413
PS3     81,780,307

2009
X360     113,710,972
PS3     92,272,648

2008
X360     113,624,187
PS3     81,465,368

2007
X360     61,924,647
PS3     28,170,649

2006
X360     25,174,366
PS3     1,996,671

Also, look at the attach ratios.

X360 3,994,325 (-8%) 403,012,359 (9.01)
Wii 3,969,294 ( 6%) 534,271,896 (7.06)
DS 2,706,330 ( 10%) 593,972,684 (4.36)
PS3 2,186,911 (-26%) 285,685,643 (6.99)

The 360 has the best of any console. Most notably for our discussion, 9.01 on the 360 vs 6.99 on the PS3.

If we align the launches PS3 software sales stand at 285 million (PS3 launched one year later in America and Japan and one and half yer later in EMEAA) and X360 260 million. X360 has better attach rate due its one year headstart. Also tracking X360 software sales is tougher task than PS3s as MS doesn't give us total SW numbers. As much as I love vgchartz our software numbers especially in EMEAA have been off. Software shipments for PS3 were already 359 million at the end of september and last time time MS gave us their ww attach rate (March) X360 software sales were 336 million. Point is that both sell software just fine.

The other problem is that PS3 software is pretty much undertracked, 350M shipped 285M sold... and X360 may be overtracked (by how much I dunno) because we'll never have Microsoft shipped numbers. They never release them.
