NES was a monopoly in the USA. People always remember that it released in 1985 (NYC) / 1986 (LA then nationwide) in the USA, but it still had biggish holiday seasons for many years after.
If you consider August to December a holiday lineup, look at what NES had in the USA in its decline years:
1989: Dragon Quest, Faxanadu
1990: Mega Man 3, Double Dragon III, Ducktales, Dragon Quest 2
1991: NES Open Tournament Golf, Ninja Gaiden III
1992: Mega Man 5, Dragon Quest 4
1993: Yoshi's Cookie
1994: Wario's Woods
Double Dragon, Ducktales, Dragon Quest, Mega Man and Ninja Gaiden were amongst the most legendary series on the NES and so I think I'm on fairly sturdy ground in saying that if you bought alot of content for NES pre-1989 its entirely possible to have gone NES ---> PS1, skipping the entire SNES / Gen era. Super Mario Bros. 3 was also pretty late in the NES cycle which helped the system peak in 1989.
