I think it's a good move by Sony. While 3D is not really a huge selling point for the PS3 now, I can see it becoming more so a couple of years down the line as the price of 3d tv's and monitors comes down. I know it seems a bit unintuitive to try to push 3D so hard before its adoption into the home, but I think the idea is that if Sony can get people to associate 3D with the PS3 and visa versa then when people go to buy 3Dtvs they will be more inclined to buy a PS3 because of the association.
I am a huge fan of 3D so I am biased though.
